Focus: Confronting Narcissism In The Church

This is very different from what we typically do, but we cannot shake the sense that it needs to be taught and the Church needs tools to deal with it. By the grace of God, we will do so this weekend!

Before we can overcome narcissism in the church, we need to understand what narcissism really is. But it takes on, perhaps, a far greater danger within the church, so we have to learn to identify it’s religious masks and tactics. We need to understand that many who exhibit this disorder are unaware of it and need freedom. And we also need to understand the limits of what we can really do without falling into some of the same behavior ourselves or slipping into a codependent role to seek some sort of peace.

If you’re like most of us who have been forced to face it, you weren’t trained to deal with it and you didn’t even understand what it was until it had already caused extensive issues in your life and relationships. Chances are, you were left feeling that narcissism is an overwhelmingly impossible obstacle.

Studies have shown that the incidence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder more than doubled in just the first ten years of the 2000’s. Other studies are suggesting that, generally speaking, millennials are the most narcissistic generation ever. Whatever the actual facts may be, the evidence of it is clearly increasing throughout our entire culture.

The church is full of imperfect people like us all who are in a journey with God. Since narcissism is a human issue, it’s not surprising to find it in the church. But it should never be seen in leadership. And yet sadly, it is too often a stark reality on every level.

We’re going to get together and talk about it as a group. We’re going to start telling our story and shine light into shadows. And we’re going to pursue keys for handling and overcoming narcissism in the church.
