The Son Can Do Nothing Of His Own Accord

by

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.” John 5:19-20

Sometimes people pray for God to move in power and then actively deny Him permission when the moment comes because they don’t believe it will come. Other people pray for God to move while micro-managing the Holy Spirit out of the equation. The underlying problem is wanting God to move “of our own accord.” We may say we want God—we want to see God do greater things in this generation; but is it only on our terms, within our box?

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

Are we trying to do something of our own accord and then wonder why the Father isn’t doing anything in it? Did we already decide what it needs to look like or to fit inside of? Did we already invent our favorite ways and enthrone our own thoughts and ideals?

The truth is, the Father is actively doing something, but what we do of our own accord will never be sufficient. A move of God does not come by our might, by our power, by our intellect, morals, doctrine, programs, systems, management, marketing, hype, or whatever it is we want to try to reinvent next. It will only be, “…by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” Zech 4:6

Yet there are some who follow the example of Christ: they find out what the Father is doing and then they do likewise—they do something to cooperate with God. They are ready for God to move on any terms—in the box, out of the box, at the box next door… they are fully willing to surrender their thing for God’s thing. They are just starting with what they have available at hand and one purpose at heart: to see a move of God, whatever the cost.

The question must become personal. Do you really want a move of God in your life, family, church, city, region, nation? Or do you actually just want God to sprinkle a little blessing on something of your own accord?
