The God of Religious Knowledge

If we think we have a correct understanding of the truth in the Scriptures, but it’s not leading us into actual, present, and ongoing encounter in the Presence of God, we are missing the main point. Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40)

We can subtly begin to believe that Bible knowledge equals relationship with God, when in reality we are making religious knowledge our god. Then the god of religious knowledge that we thought was safeguarding us from deception inevitably carries us directly into it and restrains us from real surrender.

With enough knowledge, you can use the Scriptures to support just about anything you want to believe, but that doesn’t make it right. The problem is not the Scriptures–the problem is our focus and intent. We must let the written Word lead us to encounter the living Word.
