Jesus said, “Go figure out what this means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’” (Mat 9:13). Religion enforces specific rules and ideals, and requires judgment for failure at any point. But mercy triumphs over judgment (Jam 2:13).
Jesus didn’t come to enforce the rules and judgments of the law. He came so that it would be possible to have life by canceling the record of my debts and my failures to live up to those rules, along with the judgments leveled against me (Col 2:14).
Jesus came to give me mercy, to set me free from religion by giving me a new life, making me able to live as He lived by giving me His Spirit, and empowering me to live by a new law written on my heart — just as it was in the beginning. Now, Jesus is desiring that His mercy would be displayed through my transformed life. I must live for mercy.
